Deanna Canales (she/her)
Health Education Specialist
The plan that Deanna’s parents had for her to learn about sexual health, was to provide her with a book. “The Care And Keeping of You” from the American Girl Library, piqued her interest in bodies. She read the entire book in minutes and was really interested in personal hygiene and menstruation.
From then on, Deanna became excited about sexual health. Whenever the topic of STIs came up, she readily studied the material and answered questions. After a few detours in college, Deanna joined the Student Health Advisory Committee at Cal State Los Angeles. She dove deep into the work, by offering to help write up topics for Health Huts, putting together materials, and educating her peers about sexual health.
Today, Deanna is committed to empowering youth to become leaders and to speak up for public health issues within their communities. She graduated in 2019 with a degree in Public Health and is currently pursuing her Master's in Public Health at San José State University. In her free time, she enjoys competing in powerlifting meets, attending music festivals, and dancing salsa and bachata.
